Coalition to Stop Danford Lake Mega Dump Marks Third Anniversary

Three years ago today, concerned citizens in West Quebec joined together to thwart the establishment of a megalandfill and to promote alternative solutions. This proposed megalandfill (total area: 290 hectares) threatens a pristine wilderness area about 100 kms north of Gatineau and Ottawa.

The group’s petition was signed by over 4,000 citizens. During the past thirty-six months, the Coalition has organized public meetings and demonstrations, conducted surveys, submitted formal position papers to various government bodies, appeared before local and regional municipal councils, participated in several provincial and municipal public consultations, waged a spirited public relations campaign in the media, and raised over $50,000.

The Coalition is encouraged by the fact that, in March 2008, the great majority of West Quebec mayors decided to seek a regional solution other than landfill to be implemented by 2013.

The Coalition remains vigilant, and is anxious to participate in public consultations about the choice of the technology and its future location.

It is our hope that the provincial government will see the commercial and energy potential in garbage by supporting the Region’s efforts and make Quebec a leader in green waste management.
